Fulton Hogan Ltd. - Smithbridge Joint Venture

Location: Mt Manunganui - Route PJK Expressway, New Zealand

Situation: The steep K6 cut had potential for landslip, and was in an earthquake zone, and an engineering design for slope retention was required.

Solution: Instant Screw Piling was contracted for design services only. The screw pile anchors had to hold the face of the excavation beyond the slip circle.

Joint Venture: Shell Petrochemicals and CNOCC

Location: Daya Bay (China)

Situation: Design, and supervise the installation of foundations to overcome uplift in a large concrete discharge basin.

Solution: The $US4.5B Shell Nanhai petrochemicals project will be the largest plant of its kind in the world. The high water table under the massive 110m x 10m, 6-metre deep discharge basin applies considerable hydrostatic uplift on the base of the basin.

Instant Screw Piling was called upon to devise a foundation that coped with pile tension loans of 350kN and compression loads of 400kN. The solution was one-piece screw piles, between 12 and 15 metres deep, with twin 700mm diameter helixes at the base. This was the first application of screw piles in China...

Queensland Transport

Location: South East Busway, Mt Gravatt (Brisbane, QLD)

Situation: Soil nails had failed in a retaining wall, after heavy rain, causing rotation in the retaining wall.

Solution: To stabilise the retaining wall tonnes of rail ballast were placed against the base of the embankment, to prevent further movement, and half of the road above it was blocking off.
